  Remember: To ensure your TOEFL iBT result is valid for Australian visa purposes, you must select ‘Taking TOEFL for Australia’ when registering for your test. Results not registered under this pathway may not be accepted for Australian visa process. 

Test Taken On or Before 6 August 2025

Test results from the following exams, taken at a secure test centre, are still accepted by the department up until specific time frames:

• Cambridge English (CAE) (also known as C1 Advanced)
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS), including One Skill Retake (OSR)

1. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General (CELPIP General)

Applications for Australian visas are now accepted using the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP General), which is commonly used in Canada. The CELPIP-General assesses your English speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities. It is recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for applications for permanent residence, by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for visa purposes, and by universities, colleges, and vocational programs for professional designation.

CELPIP tests come in two different forms. 

a) CELPIP-General Test: Used for professional designations and applications for permanent residence, this test assesses your English speaking, reading, listening and writing abilities.

b) CELPIP-General LS Test: The test assesses your English speaking and listening abilities and is used for professional designation and citizenship applications. 

2. LANGUAGECERT Academic Test (LANGUAGECERT Academic)

The multilevel English test LANGUAGECERT Academic evaluates your ability for both academic and everyday communication. The Australian Department of Home Affairs formally accepts it for all visa categories that call for evidence of English language competency. The test is computer-based and lasts for two hours and thirty-four minutes. The official results are expected to be available to you in five working days. 

Exam structure of  LANGUAGECERT academic test:

• Reading- 50 mins
• Speaking- 14 mins approx
• Writing- 50 mins
• Listening- 40 mins approx

3. Michigan English Test (MET) Including Single Section Retake (SSR)

The simplest but high-stakes English test that you can take at authorised testing centres is the Michigan English Test (MET). The University of Michigan developed the internationally recognised Michigan English Test. For visa applicants who would prefer this testing format, it now offers an alternate option. 

In certain countries, the MET is a digital examination that can be completed remotely. You can schedule your test date whenever you would like, and the test lasts for 155 minutes.

Exam structure of MET are: 

Reading- 65 mins
Speaking- 10 mins 
Writing- 45 mins
Listening- 35 mins

You may retake any exam whenever it is convenient for you, unless your invalidation letter specifically states otherwise. You may ask to retake the Writing, Listening, or Reading sections.

• Only one skill may be retaken by test takers.
• After the results are released, a retake must be requested within three days.
• Within 28 days of the initial test date, the retake must be finished.
• Scores are typically available five days after the retake date.
• There is a retake fee.

Remember:

a) If a higher score is obtained on the retake: A fresh score report is released. The score from the retake will be included in the report.

b) If the retake gets a lower score: The initial score report is released. A retake will not appear in the report.

General English Language Requirement for International Students
